Story of the 2008 Grand Marshalls
Welcome everyone. Every year we select a Grand Marshall for the Medical Center 6K who sets an example for all of us by working toward good health.
This year for the first time we are celebrating an inspirational team— three sisters Laura Jutras, Julie Paul and Donna Stone. Two years ago Laura was diagnosed with cancer. After going through chemotherapy, radiation and surgery she was told to exercise and stay in shape to help protect herself from any recurrence. Her sisters decided to help her in any way they could.
Donna started New Year’s 2007 with a resolution to get more active herself and when she saw the flyer for the SNHMC 6K employee seminars last year, she decided to give it a try. She’d never been a runner but hoped she could learn. Donna let her sisters know what she was planning to do, and Laura and Julie decided to join her, even though Julie suffers from asthma and a bad knee. Donna gathered the information on the “Couch Potato to 6K” program and forwarded it to both her sisters. They trained both separately and together, staying in touch and encouraging each other as they conquered longer running distances and times.
To their joy they ran together last year and did not even finish last. This year they are returning to run again. And this year they are bringing their mother Irene who will walk with her grandchildren. The 6K has become a real family affair.
So thank you all. You serve as an inspiration to us. I am proud to introduce Donna, Julie, and Laura as the 2008 Grand Marshalls of the Medical Center 6K.
