A Message From the Chair — excerpted from the Cancer Committee Annual Report 2006
The Cancer Committee is proud to serve the patients and families in the greater Nashua community with outstanding cancer care. In 2006, under the leadership of the Cancer Committee, two key initiatives—the hiring of a cancer care coordinator and the CaringBridge™ initiative—came into being, improving the communication among patients, families, providers, and their care givers.
The Cancer Committee continues to provide public education and early detection programs and services to better serve our community. Our signature program, Community Medical School, received high marks for its Fall 2006 semester, Best of the Best of Cancer Care, as expert faculty from The Medical Center, Dartmouth-Hitchcock Nashua, Nashua Regional Cancer Center, Associated Radiologists, PA, and special guest lecturers from Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, MA, and Lahey Clinic, Burlington, MA, shared their knowledge and expertise with our community.
Thanks to Joan Finn, RN, from Nashua Oncology/Hematology, women undergoing cancer treatment have a new resource at The Medical Center, the American Cancer Society "Look Good, Feel Better" program. The program meets monthly and offers camaraderie, refreshments, and a kit valued at $200 to any woman needing support during her treatment process.
In October, the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk celebrated its most successful year, raising over $256,000 in Nashua, compared to $190,000 last year. We applaud oncology nurse and Cancer Committee member Ann Lorden, RN, and the 93 dedicated SNHMC walkers who made this event such a success!
Sincerely,
Timothy D. Scherer, MD
