NICU >>

While most births happen without any complications, it’s comforting to know that our Level III Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is available, just in case. One of just three in the state, it is the only one in Greater Nashua, and offers family-centered care in a quiet environment.

Our NICU is an 18-bed unit located just down the hall from The Birth Place. Most of the babies admitted to the NICU are premature, sometimes delivered as much as twelve weeks early. Others, up to six months of age, may be admitted with a medical condition that requires constant observation and intensive care. The NICU is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and is run by a highly specialized team. Here are some of those people:

  • Neonatologists and Pediatric Hospitalists (doctors who specialize in the care of sick and premature newborns)
  • Registered Nurses specializing in Neonatal Care
  • Neonatal Nurse Practitioner
  • Respiratory Therapists
  • Nutritionists
  • Social Workers
  • Lactation Consultants

Our team works with you to provide your baby with the most appropriate care for his or her medical and developmental needs.

Infants are also transferred here from hospitals all over New Hampshire to receive the specialized care they require while closer to home and their families. Our NICU transport team is available 24 hours a day.

Having a baby in need of intensive care is stressful in the best of circumstances. Being close to sophisticated treatment can allow parents to remain at home, near the support of family and friends. Because the family plays such a vital role in each baby’s recovery, we make the NICU feel comfortable and welcoming. We encourage skin-to-skin contact as much as possible, and provide quiet, private areas for time alone with your baby.

You will get plenty of support breastfeeding your baby from our experienced nursing staff and certified lactation consultants. To learn more about renting a breast pump, click here.

Visit!
Parents are welcome anytime. But please ask family and friends NOT to visit if they are ill or if they have been exposed to chicken pox in the past three weeks.

To ensure the babies' safety, NICU entrances are locked. Let us know you are here by picking up the phone just outside the NICU doors. Siblings of any age may visit in the NICU. Other children must be at least 12 years old.
