August 27, 2007 - SNHMC Announces Digital Mammography Beginning October 1, 2007
Nashua,NH - The deNicola Breast Health Center at Southern New Hampshire Medical Center is pleased to announce it will offer digital mammography for all patients beginning October 1, 2007. Studies show that the new technology is more effective at finding breast cancers in certain groups of women.
"If you are under 50 years of age, pre-menopausal or have dense breasts, you may benefit from this technology," says Dr. Steven Birnbaum, Director of Breast Imaging at the deNicola Breast Health Center. “But the test is only as good as the ability of the staff to administer it, read it and interpret it."
The staff at Southern New Hampshire Medical Center includes board certified radiologists, mammography certified radiology technologists and a breast health specialist who is a registered nurse.
"This is the most experienced diagnostic team in southern New Hampshire, performing the largest number of breast imaging procedures," adds Birnbaum, “and we are pleased to offer this expertise to our patients.”
Mammograms are the most important tool women have to diagnose breast cancer. An x-ray of the breast, this test can locate a cancerous lump long before it can be felt. For over 35 years, breast images have been taken by a specialized X-ray machine creating a two dimensional picture on film. As in photography and all other areas of medical imaging, digital imaging is now the state of the art in breast imaging.
Digital mammography takes the x-ray image and stores it directly on a computer. The image can then be manipulated by enlarging it or changing contrast to make the view clearer. In addition the digital mammogram, with its increased diagnostic potential, does not use increased doses of radiation. It is important to realize that the radiation doses that a patient is exposed to with mammography are minimal and that this concern should never deter a patient over the age of 40 from having a screening mammogram at regular intervals. The files can also be emailed to another physician for a second opinion.
The American Cancer Society recommends that all women over 40 have a mammogram every year. For more information about digital mammography call the deNicola Breast Health Center at 603-577-2830.

April 6, 2007- SNHMC Announces New 64-Slice CT Scanners
With the recent installation of two 64-slice Computed Tomography (CT) scanners, Southern New Hampshire Medical Center now offers patients the most advanced diagnostic imaging technology available.
The state-of-the-art 64-slice CT scanners provide high resolution images in lightning fast speed—the new devices can scan a heart, brain, or lungs in about five seconds and the entire body in about 10 seconds A rotating x-ray beam revolves around the patient and a digital computer creates a three dimensional cross section of the image from this information. This new machine collects 64 different slices of information at the same time.
“We are pleased to offer this diagnostic service to our patients 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” says Diane Dionne, Director of Radiology at Southern New Hampshire Medical Center. “This state-of-the-art technology allows us to continue to offer a higher level of care to our patients.”
The advanced technology has many life-saving applications—it is particularly useful in emergency trauma situations and in cases where patients are not able to hold their breath or hold still for longer scans. With the 64-slice scan, doctors receive quick results, allowing them to start life-saving interventions sooner.
Aside from acute care, the 64-slice scanner has far-reaching implications in the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease, cancer, stroke, lung disease, and other serious conditions. The images produced are remarkably more detailed than those provided by conventional scanners and will improve diagnostic capabilities for our providers.
CT angiography will allow for imaging of the heart and blood vessels—and provide the first non-invasive means to get detailed views of coronary arteries. The result is that physicians have the tools to diagnose coronary artery disease earlier and to begin treatment before a major heart event occurs.
For more information on the 64 Slice CT scanner, visit www.snhmc.org or call HEALTHMATCH at 603-577-2255.
